Large Market Basket

Supplies Needed:

(1) 10x17 inch wooden D handle
(7) 37" long 5/8 inch flat reed pieces
(10) 33" long 5/8 flat reed pieces
Sea Grass for rim filler
5/8 Flat oval for rim
1/2 inch flat weavers
1/4 inch flat colored reed weavers
3/8 flat colored reed weaver

1/4 inch flat oval for lashing

Soak reed pieces at least 5 minutes before using

Mark centers of the (7) 37" 5/8 inch flat reed

Find center of handle and lay first piece of
flat reed over center mark, matching up center mark on flat reed

Lay out three 37" reed pieces on each side of center piece in an over/under pattern

Mark centers of the (10) 33" inch long pieces of flat reed

Weave the first piece beside handle bottom in an opposite over/under pattern, lining up the center mark with the 37" center weaver

Do the same on opposite side of handle, finish weaving in the remaining 33" inch pieces in an over/under pattern

Square the base to 9.75 inches x 13.5 inches

Upset the stakes all the way around the base, bending at a 90 degree angle

Start a soaked/wet 1/2 inch flat weaver as shown. Weave around the bottom in an over/under pattern

Keep the edges square as you go around

When you get around to the beginning 'overlap' the weaver across 4 stakes, including the one you started with. This will hide the end of your weaver behind a stake

Turn the basket and start a new weaver on the opposite side

Make sure you always start on top of a weaver that has gone under the stake, as shown

Always start a new weaver on a different side than where you ended

Keep the row on top as tight to row beneath it as possible, snugging them together with your fingers as you weave around each stake

The first 3 or 4 rows always feel 'sloppy.' Don't worry, everything will smooth out as you weave up

Keep each corner uniform as you weave

Keep weaving, making sure stakes are parallel to one another, and keeping each row tight to the one below it

Weave up 12 rows

Soak several pieces of colored reed of your choice.

Pull colored reed through a piece of papertowel to remove excess dye

Weave in 2 inches height of colored reed

Add one row of 1/2 inch flat reed

Add one row of 3/8 inch flat reed. This will be the 'rim' row
